Reception – Early Years Foundation Stage
Welcome to Hedgehog Class.
When the children start school in September they have already met the Early Years team during visits made to pre-school settings and during home visits. They have also had the opportunity to visit the class and school in general during transition visits in the summer term.
Emphasis is placed on making the class (inside and outside) a welcoming and stimulating environment where the children will become independent learners. Reception children follow the curriculum Development Matters and learning takes place through child initiated activities, adult initiated activities and adult led activities. There are 17 areas of learning grouped under the headings of Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Communication and Language, Expressive Art and Design, Understanding the World, Literacy and Mathematics.
Assessment is an ongoing process and the children have individual Next Steps that they work on identified from Development Matters. In Hedgehog Class we use Tapestry (an on-line program) to record their learning and this is shared with parents and carers. This is very much a two-way record and we love to see what the children are learning and interested in outside of the school.
Children are taught phonics using the DfES Letters and Sounds phonics programme and Jolly Phonics.
As a Federation we follow the PATHS programme to support behaviour. Each class has a colour coded reward system which celebrates good behaviour and good learning and the children are rewarded with Golden Time on a Friday afternoon.
All parental support at home and in school is welcomed and time taken to share books, play games, count etc with your child is greatly valued and will benefit their learning.
I am always available at the end of the school day to answer any questions as mornings can be a little busy!
